Lily Gladstone Was a Walking Red-Sequined Dream at the Costume Designers Guild Awards

If someone walked into a designer’s studio and asked for an entire outfit inspired by Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, we bet it would look something like the electric-red ensemble Lily Gladstone wore to the 26th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards on Wednesday evening.

The Oscar-nominated star of Killers of the Flower Moon stole the show in an all-red set from Valentino, courtesy of the brand’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli. The candy-apple ensemble was covered entirely in sequins, and Gladstone shimmered as she walked in her long-sleeved collared shirt and wide-leg pants. The top featured a thick, buttonless placket that extended halfway down the design, while the pants totally engulfed her black platform shoes.

On the red carpet, the actor kept a matching fluffy jacket draped across her arms, with the long train trailing behind her. Meanwhile, she accessorized with beaded earrings, which extended to her collarbone and featured arrow-shaped ornaments at the bottom. For her makeup, Gladstone sported a puce-pink lipstick and light blush. She also rocked an asymmetrical hairdo, with her wavy locks resting on one side of her face.

At the event, Gladstone presented an award, and she took the opportunity to show her appreciation for Killers of the Flower Moon costume designer Jacqueline West, as well as the Osage wardrobe consultant on the film, Julie O’Keefe.

“Every article of clothing that I wore, every blanket that I held, every Wabonka pin, every moccasin—all of it was steeped in tradition and conveyed deep cultural significance, which really helped represent who Mollie was,” Gladstone said. “It informed me how I was to approach all of the scenes that were to come. You could feel the regality and the absolute grace of an Osage woman wearing these clothes. The level of immersion that it takes to find that truth is only possible with the skill and dedication of costume designers like the ones who are in this room tonight.”
