This year’s Trooping the Colour won’t just celebrate the British monarch’s birthday—it will also mark the first public royal family reunion featuring both King Charles III and his daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales.
Princess Kate announced today that she will make her first official appearance since revealing her cancer diagnosis at Trooping the Colour, which takes place in London on Saturday. Plenty of royal watchers are surely thrilled by this news, and the head of the royal family shares their delight.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Harper’s Bazaar, “His Majesty is delighted that the princess is able to attend tomorrow’s events, and is much looking forward to all elements of the day.”
Kate shared a similar sentiment in a personal letter released by Kensington Palace today. “I’m looking forward to attending the King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer,” she wrote.
Along with announcing her highly anticipated appearance, Kate added a caveat for those hoping to see her return to full-time royal duties: “I am not out of the woods yet.”
Both Charles and Kate were diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, with the king announcing his condition in February and Kate announcing hers in March. Since then, the two have forged a united front as they’ve undergone their respective treatments.
In March, a palace spokesperson shared Charles’s reaction to Kate’s diagnosis with Bazaar.
“His Majesty is ‘so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did,’ ” the spokesperson said. The two also seemed to have bonded earlier this year, when they both had surgeries prior to their cancer diagnoses at a London hospital. The spokesperson added, “Following their time in hospital together, HM has ‘remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.’ ”
